One of Five Islands
This island is one of five off Georgetown in Maine. The outdoor picnic tables at Five Islands Lobster double as studio space and dining room. In October the light is crystal clear and the crowds are thinner. The lobster is tasty. I return every year.
I usually complete my paintings in one afternoon, racing the tide and waiting for the sun to reveal the shadows. Watercolor captures the flow of the ocean. It is also easier than oil paint to take on location.
This year art time double counts as novel research time. One of my new characters is a homeschooled lobsterman, who looks beyond the horizon. Do you recognize this photo from a few weeks ago?
Lobster Boat at Lookout Point
Lookout Point in Harpswell is my favorite place to paint, only a 15-minute drive from my house in town. As I work, lobster boats motor in, unloading the day’s fresh catch at the dock. Sometimes I bring home dinner along with my painting.

ReplyDeleteIt's the Maine coast as I remember it from long ago. Well done!
ReplyDeleteLove the watercolours as much as I love the painting. The first one is a real beauty.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Tina, troutbirder, ACIL, thanks!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, truly beautiful pieces you have painted.
ReplyDeleteI love them, Sarah :)
Smashing success on the show!
Beautiful paintings! I can't draw more than a stick tree, but even I could be inspired with such a gorgeous setting for painting and writing. Hope the art show is a success!

ReplyDeleteAll, thanks for your praise and to those who came to the show! The benefit was a big success.
ReplyDeleteYour watercolor pieces are so lovely and the island where you've painted them is so beautiful. I wish I could be there and see lobster boats. One of your new characters is a homeschooled lobsterman, who looks beyond the horizon. Hmm. sounds fascinating!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful spot to paint Sarah. I love your work table. You are so right about the watercolors being much easier to carry outside. I hope your poetic paintings brought the highest bid . . . for a good cause. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYour watercolors are very special and simply delightful! You've captured the essence of Maine beautifully!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Loi
PS - Is your husband familiar with the Freer and Sackler Galleries in DC? I worked there for a few years. Fantastic collection of Asian art, should you all visit DC.
ReplyDeleteLoi, thank you! We've visited the Sackler Museum at Harvard but haven't seen the one in DC. It must have been a wonderful experience working there. I'd love to see it next visit.
ReplyDeleteSapphire, thank you! Here I am months later, still working on that story. I love my lobsterman. I went back to the site to see it in snow. I'll post those photos soon.
ReplyDeleteCarol, thanks! Yes, it is a wonderful cause.
