A Winter Walk at Wolfe's Neck Park

It was a glorious day for a winter walk with temperatures just above freezing. We drove to Wolfe's Neck Park in Freeport, one of our favorite places in Maine. The longest loop takes only an hour so my son decided to walk the ten miles home on his own.

Together we hiked the compacted trail with only microspikes, leaving our snowshoes in the car.

Yesterday's ice storm left the trees glistening like cut glass. Streams gurgled with melting snow.

Evergreens dripped like rain.

An ocean of ice reflected the bright sunlight, so deceptively warm.

Casco Bay was still mostly frozen, fractured by thaw and tides.

As the sun slipped behind a cloud, the blues intensified.

We climbed down the slick steps to the shore.

Where the ocean stretched to the horizon and beyond.

  1. Such beautiful scenes and so reminiscent of our northeastern "Arrowhead" country and our inland sea Lake Superior. I do miss my days of Cross Country skiing there...:)

  3. Wow beautiful photos! I googled it to see where it was -- right on the tip of a point eh? Pretty bay area and woods. I have not been to Maine since my brother's wedding not far from Bath in 1984, so I enjoy seeing your scenic posts.

  4. troutbirder, it would be fun to ski by the Great Lakes.

Cynthia, if winter is your favorite season, you should move to Maine! I enjoy your southern photos when I crave summer.

Cue, yes, it's nearly on the tip of a peninsula so there are ocean views on both sides of the park. Bath is maybe a half hour drive up the coast. What a nice place for a wedding!

  10. It appears you actually had a winter this year, Sarah. I know that makes you happy. It did indeed look a glorious winter day, especially with the shining sun on such a gorgeous landscape.
